We realised that by giving sports coaches the confidence to understand living with life changing injuries/illnesses and mental health issues, they can support more people, more...
The Happiness Horsebox service is run by experienced equestrian sports coaches, qualified to level 5 skills and UKCC level 3 learning approaches. The team members each have deep connections across the equestrian world gained from over 30 years experience of coaching competitors and leisure riders of all ages, abilities and disciplines.
Since 2019, our lead coach, Liz Morrison, has facilitated ‘Coaching through Disabilities’ workshops as approved CPD for BHS accredited professional coaches. The workshops were agreed with the BEF, BHS and RDA and proved popular with plenty of discussion around the scenarios and information provided. Lock-down caused the remaining spring 2020 dates to be cancelled. We have therefore developed them as online workshops.
As part of setting up the team Liz Morrison trained as a Mental Health First Aider and began to understand the dramatic impact corona-virus would have on the anxiety levels of the people we wanted to help. Sports coaches are someone people can trust and feel confident to talk to.
So, connections have been made with physiotherapists, speech and occupational therapists, as well as mental health / dementia specialists. We will include them in these online workshops. By supporting our coaches in this practical way we are also encouraging them to engage more effectively with people in their own communities.
So, if you are a sports coach and would like to build your confidence to talk about mental health issues and coach people living with a range of life changing illnesses and injuries, please join our online CPD workshop programme. We are seeking grants and funding to make the cost as low as possible.
